Worlds away from the ordinary, Shawu’s Hide takes its name from one of the most magnificent Great Kruger Tuskers – Shawu – whose presence commanded awe and gentle nature allowed for close encounters. We embraced his name and his character with an unfenced safari lodge that embodies a sense of grandeur and offers opportunities for encounters so close that they feel like a private conversation.

A sanctuary carved by nature

Set within the UNESCO Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, Welgevonden game reserve is only a 2 ½ hour drive from the nearest city, with easy access from a tar road. As a part of the Biosphere Reserve, known for its dramatic mountain ranges, unique sandstone formations, and vital water catchment areas, Welgevonden Game Reserve has a responsibility to the space it holds and the wildlife that walks the land to conserve the biodiversity of the area, develop sustainably, and minimise the impact of humans – and so do we. With no private vehicles allowed, the reserve offers an intimate and immersive safari experience. Once you arrive, you will be transferred from the gate to the lodge by our friendly guide, Biggy, where adventure and quiet repose await.

2026 Renovations

Shawu’s Hide is set on Stand 27 in Welgevonden Game Reserve and perched on a hilltop with sweeping reserve vistas. As the newest addition to the Mbazo Safari Collection, the lodge is currently undergoing a thoughtful revamp, and will open on 15 Decemeber 2026 as a luxury, all-inclusive retreat for up to 10 guests.

The ldge will offer the rare privilege of exclusivity – a private safari lodge that feels like your own. The lodge is the perfect retreat for families or groups of friends looking to share an intimate safari experience. For solo travellers, or smaller groups, the lodge grants you the privacy you seek, while offering moments of community and a chance to befriend fellow safari lovers while admiring the wildlife at the watering hole, or sharing conversations around the fire.
